[NAME]: emerging from the tv … curling herself up … weeping quietly

GUARDIAN ANGELS OF BLACKNESS (GABs): appearing

GAB 2: comforting [NAME]

GAB 1: oh HELL no! she done messed with the wrong one! i oughta reach in that tv and snatch her bony white ass back here. next time i see her i’ma whup her ass. saying that shit to my sistah.

[NAME]: i shoulda known. i shoulda known.

GAB 1: who the hell she think she is?

[NAME]: i thought she was different.

GAB 2: i know.

[NAME]: how can i be so stupid?

GAB 2: it’s not you boo. it’s not you. tell me what you need. what do you need?

GAB 1: she need to beat her ass. that’s what she need.

[NAME]: whispering i need to be alone.

GABs: …

[NAME]: whispering please. just go away.

GABs: disappearing

GABs: (appearing)

GAB 1: (reading from a notepad) lemme run something by you right quick. cotton balls.

GAB 2: ???

GAB 1: q-tip.

GAB 2: ???

GAB 1: marshmallow. snowflake. mayonnaise. wonderbread.

GAB 2: ???

GAB 1: you got all that?

GAB 2: what’s this about?

GAB 1: they’re things that’s white. like our pasty guest.

GAB 2: (rolling eyes)

GAB 1: c’mon which one?

GAB 2: what were the choices again?

GAB 1: damn pay attention. cotton ball, q-tip, marshmallow, snowflake, mayonnaise, wonderbread.

GAB 2: i dunno wonderbread.

GAB 1: i like snowflake.

GAB 2: then what you ask me for?

GAB 1: (shrugging)

GABs: (disappearing)

SCENE: [Name]’s apartment

[NAME]: preparing for bed … lying down … sleeping

GUARDIAN ANGELS OF BLACKNESS (GABs): appearing

GAB 1: well?

GAB 2: well what?

GAB 1: gesturing at the tv

GAB 2: shrugging

GAB 1 : c’mon now you gotta think something.

GAB 2: nope. unlike you i don’t need to have an opinion about everything she does.

GAB 1: i don’t think it’s gonna work.

GAB 2: what makes you believe that?

GAB 1: cuz she a skinny rich white girl.

GAB 2: as you have said. yet again.

GAB 1: what they gonna talk about?

GAB 2: i imagine whatever they want

GAB 1: i bet they gonna talk about something stupid like organic food and the new episode of glee. homegirl don’t even watch glee.

GAB 2: looking at GAB 1 … shaking her head

GAB 1: what? what?

GABs: disappearing

[NAME]: doing an internet search on her laptop … finding the site she’s looking for … dialing a number on her cell phone

um hi. is this the [name of city] society of paranormal research? um i think uh i think i’m being haunted. or something. uh no i haven’t seen anything but um i notice weird stuff. like um when i go to bed my tv is off but when i wake up it’s turned on. the remote? on a bedside table. yeah i thought about that so i did sort of an experiment. i put the remote in another room and the same thing happened again. uh-huh. um. ok. uh no not officially. well um i always saw stuff ever since i was little but my mom and dad didn’t make a big deal out of it because i never hurt nobody. hello? do you think you can come check it out? mm-hm. yeah. i understand. um ok then. thanks. bye.

A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT STYLE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

You may notice that I do something weird with the verb tense and punctuation for these scenes. This is mainly to give you more freedom to decide how things are said and when the character performs each action. There are some moments where a character will have only ellipses to say. Imagine those moments as a thoughtful, pregnant pause where there is a lot going on internally that cannot be put into words yet must be expressed. Honestly, it’s better to show you than to explain it, so if you can, come see Tulpa, or Anne&Me so you can get a better idea of what I mean.
